- Birds get no nutritional value from standard bread as it contains no protein which birds require to develop muscles and feathers and contains no fat which brids require for energy. Whilst it fills the birds' stomachs to eleviate hunger it is not beneficial and if eaten excessively, bread will cause health problems for birds, including malnutrition and obesity.
- If you use a bread feeder please use it wisely. Use wholemeal or multigrain bread and idealy create a sandwich with peanut butter, beef fat drippings, softened suet or grape or apple jelly or orange marmalade. After spreading the bread with these toppings, there are other items that can be carefully pressed into a sandwich to make it a delicious treat that offers far better nutrition than bread alone. Finish a bird-friendly, open-faced bread sandwich with fillings like: birdseed, either a mix, black oil sunflower seed, or hulled sunflower seed, mealworms, crickets, or other dried insects, raisins, cranberries or other small bits of dried fruit, thin orange or apple slices, nut hearts or small whole nuts, especially peanuts, pumpkin seeds or other squash seeds.
